Miss Maryland Agriculture to be Selected at the 30th Maryland State Fair PDF Print E-mail

1LaurenJacksonOpening Day at the 2011 Maryland State Fair, presented by Toyota, will be full of anticipation as 23 young women compete for the title of Miss Maryland Agriculture, Friday, August 26, 7:30 p.m., in the Cow Palace Show Ring. The young women, between the ages of 16 and 19, who have earned their place in the Miss Maryland Agriculture Contest by winning their county Farm Bureau-sponsored contests, will compete for the prestigious Miss Maryland Agriculture title, scholarship and cash awards valued at approximately $10,000. The reigning Miss Maryland Agriculture, Lauren Jackson of Calvert County, will have the honor of passing her title on to her successor. In addition, scholarship awards ranging from $1,000-$2,000 will be presented to the four runners-up by The Maryland Farm Bureau.

“Miss Maryland Agriculture has many opportunities throughout the year to travel the State of Maryland and spread the message of how vital agriculture is to our state,” said Miss Maryland Agriculture State Coordinator Mary Amoss. The 23 young women vying for the Miss Maryland Agriculture 2011 title will be critiqued during a two-day competition, primarily on their farm/agricultural experience, speaking ability, Farm Bureau knowledge, personality, friendliness and personal presentation. “We are pleased to continue this tradition which has been established over the last 65 years,” said Maryland State Fair President Howard “Max” Mosner. “The Miss Maryland Agriculture Contest will help continue the legacy of promoting agriculture, our State’s number one industry.”

Miss Maryland Agriculture 2011 will be present throughout the run of the Maryland State Fair to award prizes, and mingle with fairgoers, dignitaries, and media representatives. Her responsibilities will continue throughout the year, as she will participate in a number of activities representing Maryland agriculture and the Maryland Farm Bureau. The runners-up will assist Miss Maryland Agriculture with award presentations and serve as hostesses for dignitaries.
