ANNAPOLIS, MD  Governor Martin O’Malley recently joined U.S. Senator Cardin, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary LaHood,  U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Salazaar and other federal, state and local officials to celebrate the America’s Great Outdoors initiative and the Anacostia River Trail.

Officials celebrated the recent completion of 12 miles of trail in the District and 1.5 miles of trail in Maryland with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Both trails are part of the larger Anacostia Riverwalk Trail system which will offer nearly 60 miles of contiguous trails and provide additional opportunities for residents and visitors to access Anacostia Park and the Anacostia River once complete.

Following the ribbon cutting, Governor O’Malley announced two new Cycle Maryland bicycle funding programs and invite officials on a bike ride along the newly completed trail segment that will ultimately connect to the District’s portion of the Riverwalk Trail.

The event will also launch the Anacostia River Watersheds’ selection as one of seven pilot projects in the Urban Waters Federal Partnership. The partnership is an effort spearheaded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of the Interior along with 9 additional federal agencies to stimulate regional and local economies, create local jobs, improve quality of life, and protect Americans’ health by revitalizing urban waterways in under-served communities across the country.
