Sultana Projects is pleased to announce the trip dates and itineraries for its 2011 Chesapeake Adventures Summer Programs. Chesapeake Adventures provides week-long expeditions on the Chesapeake Bay for young adults ages 11 - 14. In addition to the very popular trips on the 1768 Schooner Sultana, this year there are also week-long kayaking adventures on the National Park Service’s Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.

Sailing Trips on the Schooner Sultana

SULTANA is a reproduction of a topsail schooner used by the British Royal Navy to enforce the infamous “Tea Taxes” along the North American coast in the years preceding the American Revolution. Built directly from the Royal Navy’s original 1768 plans, the modern SULTANA is one of the most accurate replicas of an 18th century sailing vessel found anywhere in the world. Chesapeake Adventures trips on SULTANA are five days in length, and generally see SULTANA make a port-to-port transit of approximately 100 miles on the Chesapeake Bay. SULTANA trips accommodate nine students under the supervision of six crew.

Kayaking Adventures on the John Smith Trail

New for 2011, Chesapeake Adventures will be offering fiveday kayaking trips taking place on the National Park Service’s new Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Established in 2006, the John Smith Trail follows the route of Captain John Smith’s 1607-1609 exploration of the Chesapeake, and includes some of the most remote and pristine areas of the Bay. Each kayaking trip will split its time between the Sassafras and Chester rivers on Maryland’s northern Eastern Shore, and the Nanticoke and Pocomoke rivers and famous Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on the lower Eastern Shore. Kayaking trips accommodate ten students under the supervision of three staff.
