Maryland Rolls Out Two Clean Transportation Programs PDF Print E-mail
Energy Efficient and Alternative Energy in MD

Starting this month, Maryland now has two new public-private partnerships, the Maryland Electric Truck Voucher Program and the Maryland Idle Reduction MD_logoGrant Program. These two programs will provide partial financial assistance to cover the costs associated with all-electric trucks and on-board idle reduction technologies.

Maryland Backs Clean Transportation

The new programs are funded through the Maryland Department of Transportation and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, respectively. Both programs are led by the Maryland Energy Administration in partnership with the Maryland Department of Environment, the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland Motor Truck Association.

“Maryland continues to be a national leader in sustainability,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “These programs promote a prosperous future with clean air and affordable transportation.”

Electric Truck Grant Program

The Maryland Electric Truck (MET) Voucher Program will provide vouchers to registered Maryland Motor Truck Carriers to offset the incremental cost of higher priced, 100-percent electric, zero-emission medium and heavy duty trucks. The program is expected to provide 25 awards to advanced-minded fleets. Additional program information will be forthcoming from the Maryland Energy Administration in November.

Idle Reduction Grant Program

The program will offset the costs of installing idle reduction in heavy-duty trucks. Eligible vehicles include:

  • On-highway class 6 to class 8 heavy trucks. Buses are not eligible. Maryland-registered trucks including new trucks which will be registered in Maryland.
  • Idle reduction devices must be installed in the State of Maryland.
  • New trucks must be purchased from a dealership in Maryland.
  • Leased vehicles are not eligible to apply.

More information on this program is available at http://energy.maryland.gov/Transportation/idle.

“Smart investments in air emission control technology improve the quality of life of Marylanders,” said Malcolm Woolf, director of MEA. “Electric transportation and idle reduction technologies clean our air, reduce health impacts from diesel pollution and drive our economy forward through the growing demand for this equipment.”

Applications for the Idle Reduction Grant Program are now being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until 4 pm on June 1, 2012. The program ends September 30, 2012.
