First Grade is Living in the Rainforest at St. Martin’s Lutheran School
First Grader’s at St. Martin’s Lutheran School have transformed their classroom into a rainforest. Students have cut, colored, and fashioned leaves for their rainforest canopy that have been hung from the ceiling with the help of parents and first grade teacher, Lynn Miller. The canopy in First Grade’s Rainforest has become a collection of over 1,500 leaves that Mrs. Miller has saved from first graders for the past 17 years! Each year the rainforest has become more elaborate. Floor-to-ceiling palm trees and hanging oropendola nests made by the children and parents adorn every corner of the room. And, hundreds of realistic rainforest stuffed animals from scarlet macaws to golden lion tamarins to anacondas and poison dart frogs hang from the vines and cling to the classroom walls bringing it to life.
“It’s a fun way to study the world when they have that young enthusiasm so they really learn how to take care of the world,” Miller said. Students will be culminating their studies on the rainforest plants, people and animals by saving rainforest land through a program in partnership with Earth’s Birthday Project. Over the past decade first grade students at St. Martin’s have successfully raised money to save more than 50 acres of rainforest. This year’s first grade class has set a goal to save 5 additional acres of the rainforest and will run a bake sale on Thursday, May 19 to benefit their rainforest preservation efforts. The First Grade Rainforest is one of many projects that propelled St. Martin’s efforts to Go Green. After two years of intense preparation, St. Martin’s Lutheran School received notification this spring that they have been awarded the Maryland Green School certification.
