New Environmental Program Encourages Restaurants to Use Local Ingredients PDF Print E-mail

GreenPlateSpecialAnnapolis, MD - Mayor Joshua J. Cohen is making it easier to “go green” with the City’s Green Plate Special Program.

“Our Green Plate Special Program makes it easier for Annapolitans to eat locally sourced food while also supporting local business, Mayor Cohen said. “It’s good for our environment and good for our economy.”

The Green Plate Special program incorporates the use of a logo, allowing restaurants to identify dishes that feature local ingredients.  In order to participate in the program, more than 50 percent of a menu item’s main ingredients must be locally sourced within 300 miles.

“Sustainability of the City’s six commercial districts occurs when residents and visitors shop locally,” said Annapolis Economic Development Corporation President & CEO Lara Fritts.  “By continually reinvesting in Annapolis, we can help retain the City’s charm and character and continue to remain the unique business environment that separates Annapolis from other Maryland City’s and other states.”

Buying local also strengthens the economy by circulating money within the community and enables residents to choose farmers who may avoid or reduce the use of chemicals, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified seed.
