This Sat., Nov. 5, Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway needs 100 volunteers to help plant 70 new trees and 10 bushes to provide a riparian buffer along a section of Thistle Run, a small stream in Catonsville off of Route 144 on Frederick Road.
Nov. 5 Tree Planting, Cantonsville
In partnership with the Maryland State Department of Natural Resources, Patapsco State Park and Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection & Sustainability, the friends will be planting several species of native trees along this stream. Some 70 new trees (black gum, pin oak, sycamore and willow oak) will be planted, along with 10 bushes (red osier dogwood). The group will be planting on both sides of a section of Thistle Run up to a forested area. Everything possible will be done to make sure these trees make it in this section near the stream, from digging holes to placing wooden stakes and fencing around them, as well as adding root enhancer and mulch! Volunteer registration is appreciated so the group knows how many supplies they need.

It’s RAIN OR SHINE!
What to Wear
Wear comfortable waterproof shoes and clothes that can get dirty or wet. The group recommends volunteers wear long pants and shirt, so any prickly underbrush or insects won't bother you, and boots to keep your feet dry.
What to Bring
IMPORTANT: The group desperately needs volunteers to bring 1-2 gallons of tap water, buckets, shovels, sledge hammers and wheel barrows. They do have some tools, but appreciate when volunteers bring their own and will need to share with others who don't bring them.
Wheelbarrows and sledgehammers are especially appreciated if you can bring one, which is very helpful for transporting bags of mulch & pounding in wooden stakes. It’s a good idea to mark your name on any tools/equipment you bring. Volunteers are asked to bring 1-2 plastic milk cartons or soda containers filled with your own tap water. If everybody brings these filled jugs of water to water the new trees, it will make everyone’s life much easier than trying to retrieve water from the nearby stream, which only has a lot of water if it rained earlier in the week.
The group also recommends volunteers bring your own work gloves, water/drink, sunscreen and insect repellent. If you are allergic to insect bites or stings, please bring any needed medications and notify the tree captain of your allergy.
Who Can Come?
You are welcome to bring your family and friends. Children under 16 are welcome if they are supervised and accompanied by an adult volunteer. Start thinking of a name for the tree(s) you plant! The group will share the names with other volunteers at the end of the event.
